š Hi, Iām Jamal Ashley ABBAS
I specialize in bridging disciplinesāfrom engineering and economics to communication and media studiesāand leveraging AI to drive innovation. As the countryās first Petroleum Engineer and with advanced studies in Business Economics, Journalism and Media Studies, I bring a strong academic foundation to everything I do. My ability to synergize these fields allows me to craft strategic solutions that promote sustainability, development, and climate action.
šMy academic journey began with a B.Sc. in Petroleum Engineering degree from King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals in Saudi Arabia; and includes graduate studies in Strategic Business Economics (SBEP) at the University of Asia and the Pacific, and as the first Filipino to earn an M.A. in Media Studies degree from the University of the Philippinesāgraduating at the top of my class with a 1.0 GPA and Best Thesis Award as well as the Collegeās Graduate Studentsā Association President for two terms. I also have a DiplĆ“me in French Language from LāAlliance FranƧaise. Iāve always been passionate about connecting diverse disciplines to solve complex challenges.
š Since the 1990s, Iāve been at the forefront of digital content creation, managing websites, blogs, and social media for organizations like the Freelance Writersā Guild of the Philippines and the BangsaMoro Federal Business Council, Inc. My blog, jamalashley.com, is a testament to my commitment to sharing insights on diverse topics, from energy optimization to socio-economic development.
In the energy sector, Iāve worked on significant oil and gas projects (like as the Leader of the Philippine Counterpart Team sent to Hawaii to prepare Energy Pricing Computer Models that led to the Final Report on Natural Gas given to Pres. Ramos as the basis for the pricing of the Malampaya-Camago natural gas.) Iām now focused on exploring how AI can enhance renewable energy and climate solutions. I believe that better media products, powered by technology, can enlighten the public and inspire action.
āļø My primary passion is writing – whether technical, academic or journalistic. Iāve been a writer, journalist, editor for decades and won the Manila Rotary Club Journalism Award 2001. I also have a fondness for teaching and mentoring, having conducted trainings, workshops, and seminars on English, Communication, Media Studies, and Film Studies for diverse audiences. Iāve served as a professorial lecturer at institutions such as the University of the Philippines, Kalayaan College, Far Eastern University, and FEATI University. I also serve as a Founding Member of the Board of Trustees of the Journalism Studies Association of the Philippines, Inc. (JSAP), thus continuing to shape journalism education in the country.
š Through the years, Iāve been consultant to several private firms. I was also consultant to government agencies like the Office of the Presidential Adviser for Climate Change, Presidential Commission for Urban Poor (PCUP), Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG), Office of the Vice President, etc.
Beyond consulting, one of my most fulfilling roles is helping others grow by sharing knowledge and experience in fields like writing, energy, strategy, and technology integration. While we live in a globalized world, I value the importance of understanding local cultures and traditions, like my study on Reproductive Health among Muslims in the Philippines, which helps me create solutions that are both impactful and respectful.
š” I aim to foster collaboration across disciplines to create AI-driven solutions that address both global and local challenges. If youāre looking for a collaborator to co-develop projects, mentor teams, or exchange innovative insights, letās connectāIād love to explore how we can create meaningful change together!š
