JSAP on the 40th Anniv of the EDSA People Power Revolution

JSAP Statement on the 40th Anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution

Forty years ago, the Filipino people gathered at EDSA to reclaim democracy, proving that collective courage can dismantle tyranny. The People Power Revolution was not only a political turning point—it was also a moment that reshaped the role of media and journalism in Philippine society.

As we commemorate this milestone, JSAP affirms that the spirit of EDSA lives on in the pursuit of truth. The revolution underscored the power of a free press to challenge authoritarian narratives, amplify the people’s voice, and safeguard democracy. For journalism education, EDSA remains a vital lesson: that the classroom is not merely a site of technical training, but a space to cultivate ethical responsibility, critical inquiry, and courage in the face of disinformation and repression.

We honor the sacrifices of those who resisted silence and censorship, and we call on today’s generation to carry forward their legacy—not only by remembering, but by acting. Journalism students and educators must continue to defend press freedom, nurture independent thought, and ensure that the democratic gains of EDSA are not eroded by historical distortion or authoritarian resurgence.

Let this commemoration be more than remembrance. Let it be a renewal of our collective responsibility to nurture democracy, resist oppression, and build a society rooted in truth, justice, and compassion.

JSAP stands with  the Filipino nation in declaring: the spirit of EDSA lives on, and it calls us to action.
